Change is coming...

I am currently teaching Grade 5 and 6 for the 2010/11 school year. I decided to make a change. Firstly, I would like the whole community to welcome the new IPL teacher to Ikusik School. Maggie Macdonnell has a lot of teaching experience and working with children and youth. She has just returned from Africa where she was working and we are very lucky to have her in Salluit. She will be working with the IPL students and take over as project manager for Attuliit Thrift Store.

I would like to thank the community of Salluit for supporting me these past 3 years. I had no idea what I was creating when I first arrived but everything fell right into place. Attuliit has become part of the landscape and I hope it will continue for many years. People have been so kind, I could not have done it without them. Also, thank you to the Inuit from other communities for visiting our store and for passing on the word of this great little store in Salluit. It was a difficult decision to leave IPL, the students have been great, I always felt like we were one big family. I wish each and every one success throughout their lives.

Nakurmiik, Paul Maggiolo

Individualized Pathways of Learning (IPL)

IPL students from Ikusik School in Salluit, Quebec took the challenge when asked to transform an old mechanics shop into Salluit’s first ever Thrift Store. Students spent months designing and renovating the place. On December 1st, 2007, the Attuliit Thrift Store opened its doors to an anxious community. The Inuit of Salluit are now able to purchase quality new and used goods at affordable prices. Surf our website to learn more about this new and exciting project.

Commission Scolaire Kativik School Board

The Kativik School Board has come a long way since 1978 when only an elementary education was available in cramped community schools. Today, Kindergarten through Secondary V is offered in every community, and program development is ongoing in the Board's three official languages. Students have the option of studying in English or French, and study Inuit culture and language (Inuktitut) throughout their schooling. In partnership with parents, the communities and other education stakeholders, the mission statement of the Kativik School Board is:

To provide the people of Nunavik with educational services that will guide and enable all learners to develop the qualities, skills and abilities that are necessary to achieve their well-being and self-actualization.

I am very proud to announce that the Attuliit Thrift Store has won a 2010 Quebec Entrepreneurship Award. As a teacher, it is very gratifying to see the student's hard work has been recognized by others from outside of the community. This is our third year in business, I would like to thank all the students for their dedication and the people of Salluit for supporting us. The prize was a cheque valued at $550.00, a memorial bulletin board and a congratulatory letter.
